What does an SWR Analyser do?

An SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) Analyser allows trimming of mobile antennas 'IN SITU' for optimum performance. It also allows you to check antenna installation for faults and impedance match between the antenna and a transmission line and radio transmitter. It's key features include:

• Identifies issues: Aids in indicating any impedance mismatches caused by damaged cables, poor connectors, or an untuned antenna.

• Measures power/voltage: Compares forward RF power moving toward the antenna with reflected RF power bouncing back.

• Calculates ratio: Determines the Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR), which is the ratio of maximum to minimum voltage along the feedline. This ratio is critical because it tells you exactly how efficiently your system transfers power from the transmitter to the antenna.

With these useful features, a SWR analyser is best suited for troubleshooting and maintenance, being able to pinpoint system faults and simplify antenna tuning. They are also essential in protecting equipment, helping to prevent transmitter damage and reduce component strain. In addition, they aid performance optimisation by maximising signal range and improving power efficiency.
